Home Remedies

When you hear the words 'home remedy' people often think of snake oil and ground up leaves and tinctures. But more and more, enlightened thinkers instead think of healthy alternatives and natural cures.

This blog is written for those who are ready to take responsibility for their health and health care. It is my goal, and the goal of those contributing to this blog to help you as well as ourselves as we pursue natural cures and home remedies for common ailments and to find healthy ways of pursuing vitality and longevity rather than relying on pills and poison.

And whether you believe your body has a God given ability to heal itself, or believe you evolved from some sort of lower organism, you must concede that up until a few years ago the average human lifespan was increasing. And while our lifespan was increasing, medical science was still in its infancy. In order for these two statements to be true, our bodies have to possess an internal ability to heal. Otherwise our species would have become extinct centuries ago.

With that in mind, let's move forward and take a look at the different avenues we can take to find a healthy lifestyle and a cure to ailments common today. As you will soon learn there is no one-size-fits-all diet or lifestyle plan.

Usually intelligent and forward thinking people are often surprise to find that the diet and lifestyle of one seemingly healthy person would leave another person sluggish and ill. We forget to take into consideration the genetics of different people. We understand all women do not grow up to look like "Barbie" and men like "GI Joe", but fail to recognize each body type will need specific foods and exercise to suit our genetics.

It would be nice (and much easier) if we could simply say "eat this and don't eat that" and you'll be healthy. But what would suit me fine might be pure torture for someone else. There are however several truths that are universal and we should begin by exploring those.

  • Sugar is bad for you. You already knew this. If you're bright enough to be researching healthy lifestyles, natural cures, and remedies, you're smart enough to already know this. (We don't like knowing this, but we know it. I keep thinking there will be some last minute reprieve and I'll switch on the news one day and they'll say, "This just in, researchers from the most prestigious medical lab known to man have research to prove sugar is the ultimate health food." . . . I'm still waiting :-( )
  • Most people living north (or south) of the equator are lactose intolerant. And whether you are or are not, pasteurized dairy products (all the dairy products sold in your local supermarket) are virtually impossible for your body to digest and absorb properly because the pasteurization process kills the enzymes needed to completely digest the milk.

Ever notice how stuffy your nose is after you eat a bowl of ice cream or a couple of slices of pizza? That's because dairy is a mucus forming food. Partially because of the bodies inability to digest pasteurized dairy and very likely because you have some degree of lactose intolerance. (I love pizza . . . and ice cream. )

  • Cooking and microwaving depletes the vitamin and mineral value of food. Most vegetable, though not all, are healthier raw than cooked. And if you must cook a vegetable steaming is the hands down best way to do so. Luckily, for once, the healthy way is also the most tasty way. It is just hard to beat steamed veggies.
  • Other potential allergens:
    • Gluten Intolerance -conservative estimates say 1 in 30 of us have this problem.
    • Soy Sensitivity - 50% of us are sensitive to soy. And if that weren't bad enough, soy suppresses your thyroid.
    • Peanut Allergies - estimates show 8% of us are allergic to peanuts.
    • Tree Nuts - 1.1 % of us have tree nut allergies
    • Shellfish Sensitivities

By keeping these facts in mind as you plan your healthy lifestyle you will be well on your way to living the optimal way for your body type.
